Project Summary: Research project for the Equal Opportunities Commission investigating perceptions of Black and Minority Ethnic women in the workplace.

Business Issue: As part of an eighteen-month investigation entitled ‘Moving on Up? Ethnic minority women at work’ which was funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), PTI ran a research project for the EOC to ascertain the extent to which race and gender impacts upon young people’s aspirations for future work. This project also included gathering data on the impact of perceptions of bullying and harassment in different workplaces and the extent to which this has an effect on the job choices of young ethnic minority people.

PTI Action: PTI was responsible for conducting a thorough literature review of the subject area, prior to designing a bespoke survey tool to identify some of the key factors influencing choices and aspirations, including geography, travel, beliefs about work and lifestyle factors. We then analysed the outputs by gender and ethnic group, cross-tabulating against other variables where possible e.g. socio-economic group, expected qualifications and religion and outlined the implications for policy arising from the research evidence with a particular emphasis upon young Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Black Caribbean women.

Business Result: PTI compiled the resulting research report on behalf of the EOC which was subsequently published.
