Name: NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement

Industry: Healthcare

Project Summary: Breaking Through positive action training programme. Design and delivery of NetMentor e-mentoring hub.

Business Issue: Breaking Through is designed to support the development of BME staff who are expected to progress in the NHS and is primarily targeted at BME staff at senior management level to director level. The programme provides its participants with a methodology for enhancing capabilities in order to realise their full potential and to manage their own careers more successfully by equipping them with the skills to progress within the NHS. Mentoring is a key part of such a methodology.

PTI Action: As a result of a rigorous selection process, PTI became one of only a handful of framework providers on the Breaking Through programme. Our Mentoring for Success programme, an experiential learning and case study-based training module, was a cornerstone of the programme from the outset. We have also worked with the centre to develop a leading edge web-enabled mentoring system, NetMentor, which has revolutionised the BME mentoring scheme originally initiated by Sir Nigel Crisp.

Business Result: Since 2003, we have trained over 500 BME managers on our Mentoring for Success programme. The NetMentor system was successfully launched at the National Breaking Through conference in 2006.
