Name: The Scottish Executive

Industry: Government

Project Summary: Diversity leadership training for all 23 boards of the NHS in Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Executive Health Department.

Business Issue: Directors and Non-Executive Directors needed to understand current and imminent diversity legislation, as well as statistical information on communities, patients and the workforce to ensure that they are embedding good equality and human rights practices into their decision-making and affecting positive change.

PTI Action: In April 2006, PTI delivered a one day diversity development pilot for the Executive and non Executive board members within NHS Orkney, focussing on how diversity can impact and enhance organisational performance. The training underlined the legislative requirements placed on organisations and therefore the legal responsibilities of board members. The training also covered the business and governance issues surrounding equality and diversity, as well as offering insights into how the agenda may have different implications for different types of NHS organisation. In respect of service delivery, the workshops highlighted the requirement to respond appropriately to the needs of diverse communities and the importance of ensuring equitable access and treatment for all.

Business Result: As a result of the pilot workshop, PTI was asked to roll out the module to all 23 NHS Scotland boards. The roll out was successfully completed and PTI has been asked to conduct a further series of training for Scottish Executive boards.
