In response to the unique challenges of developing managers and leaders from diverse backgrounds, many organisations have turned to mentoring. Whilst mentoring can be an excellent tool, particularly in the development of under represented groups, great care must be taken if the potential of a mentoring relationship is to be fully realised. Even the most experienced mentors will face different issues when mentoring, for example, someone from a diverse background or culture. If the relationship is to flourish, both parties must be fully aware of what they are getting into and, more importantly, they must acquire the skills to ensure that the relationship is a success.
